Theatre Calgary takes Shakespeare on the Go!

Theatre Calgary takes Shakespeare on the Go!

For 2021, the traditional Shakespeare by the Bow is being re-imagined and going on the road in a fun and safe way. Theatre Calgary, in partnership with The Shakespeare Company and Hit & Myth Productions, will be taking their emerging artists to a variety of Calgary locations for the public to enjoy during the month of August. This year's Shakespeare on the Go will allow Theatre Calgary to reach out, in a new way, to more communities and people of Calgary and surrounding areas.

“Taking Shakespeare out to our entire city requires a creative group of artists to bring the magic of Shakespeare to life,” says Stafford Arima, Artistic Director of Theatre Calgary. “I am tremendously excited to see the fruits of their labours, as they take Shakespeare on the Go."

Since 2012, Theatre Calgary’s Shakespeare by the Bow program has given young emerging Alberta artists help making the transition from their training into the professional theatre by working with leading Canadian artistic, creative, and production teams to bring Shakespeare to life. For Theatre Calgary, it is important to continue this tradition for both the benefit of the emerging young artists, but also for the benefit of the greater Calgary community.

This summer Theatre Calgary introduces three casts of emerging artists traveling throughout Calgary performing scenes (not the full play) from Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors in three different 45-minute outdoor shows. These fun and uplifting performances will be following “everything-out-of-the-bag” creative storytelling. Shakespeare on the Go will be connecting with Calgary in a safe and entertaining way, bringing live theatre back to the city, and providing a stage for our emerging artists.
