In 1975, in the heart of Venezuela, Maestro Jose Abreu initiated a groundbreaking program that would not only shape the lives of countless individuals but also revolutionize the approach to music education. This program, known as El Sistema, was designed to give kids a safe haven off of the streets, by providing them with the opportunity to learn music, play instruments, and cultivate their minds in multidisciplinary ways.
IndigiDivas is envisioned as a respectful and empowering showcase of female-identifying Indigenous singers, seamlessly weaving together Indigenous traditions and cultures with the operatic and orchestral world.
Back by popular demand following a sold-out performance in 2019, don’t miss the return of conductor Steve Hackman’s epic symphonic synthesis, Brahms X Radiohead, featuring the full Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and three solo vocalists on Saturday 28 January at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Presented in partnership with One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo, this fusion of Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 and Radiohead’s OK Computer offers a re-imagining of each work through the lens of the other, exploring the explosive tension they each have in common.
On November 5th, revel in big symphonic sound in a special concert by the Calgary Philharmonic led by Associate Conductor Karl Hirzer. In tandem with the portrayal of the amorous adventures of Don Juan in Richard Strauss’ tone poem and Béla Bartók’s elaborate Concerto for Orchestra, the Orchestra is joined by Principal Tuba Tom McCaslin in John Williams’ exhilarating Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra (you might spot the Superman theme!).

Something monumental is coming this June for Calgary arts fans - Arts Commons, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and Theatre Calgary are coming together for an unprecedented creative collaboration. In three performances, Ragtime: A Concert Presentation will merge the songs of the smash-hit Broadway musical with the renowned acoustics of the Jack Singer Concert Hall on June 11 & 12, 2022.
