In a parallel universe, humanity calls the strange and unforgiving planet Mars home. Meals come in pill form and flying cars are a ubiquitous part of our lives. In this odd mirror world, a talk show flickers to life on a low-resolution television. This is vision of a lo-fi future from the creative genius of Sargeant x Comrade, TD Incubator Fellows and the artistic leaders of the 22-23 season of the TD Amplify Cabaret series.
On November 20th the first TD Amplify Cabaret of the 2021-22 season launches in the Engineered Air Theatre at Arts Commons. After almost two years of quiet venues, dark dressing rooms, and an infinite number of Zoom shows, the anticipation of live performance is palpable––and for the inaugural artists of the TD Incubator Program, even more so. Here’s a peek behind the curtain at the performers who will be lighting up the stage Saturday night, and the curators who brought it all together.
Our provincial government is lifting all Covid-19 restrictions as part of “Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan”, on July 1. And while some may be ready to jump into a no-restrictions summer with both feet, others are still feeling a little tentative and only ready to dip a toe in. We’ve rounded up a few ideas for both the jumpers and the toe-dippers to safely enjoy the arts this summer.
Ready to see something new? Want to stretch your theatrical boundaries? Maybe learn a bit about yourself? You need to stop by and check out the TD Amplify Cabaret series. These free no-holds-barred cabaret style performances celebrate a groundswell of Calgarian artistic talent from outside the ‘mainstream’ and you’ll be able to watch it virtually, from the comfort of your own home.
When Braving Beauty Cabaret co-curators Toyin Lamas and Marshall Vielle came together to conceptualize the show, they knew that they wanted to share stories: stories from Indigenous artists from Treaty 7, the First Peoples of this land, and stories from members of the African diaspora in Calgary, many of whom have arrived recently by comparison. Between these two groups there are more commonalities than you might think, woven deep into their ancestral traditions and culture – commonalities of storytelling and dance, colour and vibrancy.
The complex grace of Black femininity, the healing balm of love and compassion, a convergence of beauty and bravery from the African and Afro-Caribbean Diaspora all the way to our home on Treaty 7 land, and all-inclusive celebration of radical performances - now Queerer than ever! That is our TD Amplify Cabaret Series in a nutshell, back for 2021, bigger and better, and streaming straight to your homes.
