At nearly 40 years old, the Jack Singer Concert Hall escalators have done more than their fair share of work. Operating well over their natural lifespan, Arts Commons has oiled, cleaned, and repaired them time and time again - unfortunately, that couldn’t last forever.
The answer is National Geographic Explorer Kakani Katija. The intrepid intellect spent her youth doing triple axels and dreaming of journeying to the stars, an unlikely start for the now principal engineer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Kakani Katija earned her master’s degree in aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology with her goal firmly set on exploring space. She quickly became enamoured with the scientific applications of fluid dynamics but it wasn’t until she had the opportunity to collaborate on a research project studying the fluid dynamics of jellyfish that she found her true calling.
IndigiDivas is envisioned as a respectful and empowering showcase of female-identifying Indigenous singers, seamlessly weaving together Indigenous traditions and cultures with the operatic and orchestral world.

“When a pandemic shuts down a performing arts centre, does that mean that the staff has nothing to do?” asks Brian Beaulieu, Production Manager for the Jack Singer Concert Hall. “The answer is not at all. We’ve used that time to undo over 30 years of wear and tear on the Jack Singer Concert Hall. You won’t recognize it when we open the doors again.”
