What's in a downtown?

Weeks before the pandemic shut down the planet, in January 2020, Alex Sarian moved from New York City to Calgary to take over as president and CEO of Arts Commons.

He didn’t know much about Calgary, but his idea of a cool neighbourhood was a lot like most people: one that was walkable, with restaurants, cafes, bars and other cultural attractions, access to nature, and daycare.

Arts Commons Transformation: What Calgarians really want from their arts centre

The Arts Commons Transformation project (ACT) is a major cultural infrastructure expansion being undertaken collaboratively by Arts Commons, The City of Calgary, and Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC).

As ACT development manager, CMLC led the engagement program—seeking and collecting input from area stakeholders, the arts community and the public at large on the most important features and considerations for ACT.

With the planning stages of the Arts Commons Transformation (ACT) project underway, a number of specialty consultants are strategically being brought onto the project team. Each one of them has a very specific and specialized role to play. On February 4, 2021, Arts Commons and CMLC announced the selection of the first two members of the project team: Colliers International (Calgary) will help guide project management, and Fisher Dachs Associates (New York), whose extensive expertise as specialized theatre consultants, will bring the facility’s artistic vision to life.
