Dancing time and using time as a dance is the art of a Tap Dancer. We dare to be heard, and dedicate our time to the practice of listening. A refinement of the self and an oracle at best. When facing it all, it can feel like leaning in on a promise and hoping it works out like a Tap Dancer holding down time to bring in the band, “a one, a two, and a 1-2-3-4”. Where the melody goes from there is what it’s all about.
In January of 2021, theatre as I knew it was mostly illegal. Large indoor gatherings were restricted because of the pandemic and at that time vaccinations weren’t widely available. I was, and still am, a drama major at the University of Calgary and like many others, I didn’t really know what to do with myself in lockdown.
It’s time to get out in the sun enjoy live performing arts in the great outdoors because ArtsXpeditions is back! Entering its third season of popping up in neighbourhoods all over Calgary, ArtsXpeditions has shared music and dance, but this is the first year that it will be sharing live theatre performances.
Summer is unquestionably here with record-breaking hot weather that has found many of us looking to beat the heat with a dip in the closest body of water or lounging in the shade of our favourite park. When you’re not taking refuge from the sun, you’ll definitely want to check out the latest line-up from the Arts Commons Presents series: ArtsXpeditions! Taking the performing arts outdoors for the second year in a row, the local artists of ArtsXpeditions will be performing everything from flamenco and jazz to Indigenous drumming and even a DJ spinning electronica. ArtsXpeditions is popping up in every quadrant of the city––maybe even at a park near you!
Our provincial government is lifting all Covid-19 restrictions as part of “Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan”, on July 1. And while some may be ready to jump into a no-restrictions summer with both feet, others are still feeling a little tentative and only ready to dip a toe in. We’ve rounded up a few ideas for both the jumpers and the toe-dippers to safely enjoy the arts this summer.
As COVID-19 has swept over the world, every performing arts centre has found themselves suddenly in a position where we are unable to share art in a safe and accessible way. Online performances multiplied, and now with the weather warmer, backyard concerts have popped up. With our audience members unable to come to us, Arts Commons started ArtsXpeditions, surprise arts encounters in parks and street corners around the city.
