Six Surprising Ways to Infuse the Arts into Your Summer
Stampede is over, you've tried all the new, trendy restaurants, and now you're hankering for something different. How about infusing a bit of art into your summer? We've listed some must-see creations, performances, and events in the heart of Calgary. And if your wallet is feeling a little hollow, not to worry - they're all free!
Check Out the Downtown Public Library
The downtown public library opened in 2018 with a beautiful open and bright layout for everyone to enjoy. Within its walls is a variety of art by local Indigenous artists. The works were curated by Jared Tailfeathers, an artist who has exhibited at Arts Commons in the +15 Soundscape.
You can see these beautiful works, as well as peruse the books, at the Calgary Public Library downtown.
Soak Up the Sun and Live Performance with ArtsXpeditions
Back on the road this year, ArtsXpeditions will be popping up in communities in all four quadrants with engaging programming for all ages. There will be music, live theatre for young people, and crafts. And the best part, it’s all free! You can check out the full lineup at artscommons.ca/artsx.
Hop Off the C-train and Check Out the Art Installation at Telus Sky
Everyone can agree that the Telus Sky is an impressive building. It doesn’t look the same from any two angles, and at night it casts creative light patterns all over its surface. There’s something new to check out though! Arts Commons artist alumni Anthony Russell has a new ground-level art installation for you to enjoy, located conveniently on the C-train line.
Inglewood Night Market
If you haven’t visited the Inglewood Night Market, you’re in for a treat. Food vendors, live performances, craft sellers and artisans with a focus on locally made, locally sourced take over the street starting at 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. on select Friday evenings this summer. There’s even a family-friendly beer garden! Check out more information and dates at inglewoodnightmarket.ca.
Find the world's tallest mural
Yes, you read that right, Calgary now has the world's tallest mural! Thanks to the work of internationally renowned artist DAIM and the Beltline Urban Murals Project (BUMP), the newest addition to downtown is 95 meters high and took over 500 cans of spray paint to complete.
Find this new addition to the Calgary landscape on the eastern side of the First on Tenth building downtown, located at 123 Tenth Avenue S.W.
Catch Theatre Calgary’s Shakespeare On The Go Before It’s Gone
The sensation has returned for another summer — but the finale is coming up fast! Taking a cast of six emerging artists to a variety of Calgary and area locations, Theatre Calgary presents a 75-minute version of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Performances play at multiple locations throughout the summer and are lauded for their family-friendly, engaging, and accessible productions. Visit their website to see where they’ll be next.
