Fall for Visual Arts this Autumn Season

Fall for Visual Arts this Autumn Season

The raging hot summer has drawn to a close and it’s time to start exploring what our indoor galleries and spaces have to offer. This fall, we have six new exhibitions to share in our media and visual arts galleries throughout the building – all for free!

Returning to the +15 Soundscape is award-winning sound artist, producer, and composer Jonathan Kawchuk. He has scored the feature films, Memento Mori (National Film Board of Canada), for which he was nominated for a 2017 Alberta Film and Television Award, and Clara (Serendipity Point Films), as well as the Norwegian documentary web series, Fra Ungdommen, and a video feature for Vogue Italia and Dior. He also scored Fast Horse (CBC), which won the Special Jury Award for Directing at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Walking through the +15 hall and experiencing his soundscape might evoke pleasant memories of nature walks through Alberta’s wilds. Bird song, the sound of the wind in the leaves, thunder and rain, come together in a collage of sound.

“I am fascinated by how the music and sound we create can interact with, and stem from, the natural world, rather than just mirror the sounds and structures we hear. As such, a large portion of my work revolves around recording the natural environments that inspire it,” says Kawchuk. “Sound can never be fully separated from the land that it came from. Working with acoustic ecologists, outdoor 3D capture, and sound installation allows me to bring the experience of the world's most threatened environments to an audience.”

Kawchuk urges you to walk back and forth through the soundscape, listening to the layers of sound and see what if evokes in you.

This is just one of the six exhibitions featured in the galleries of Arts Commons. To learn more about what’s live now in the +15 Soundscape, Broadcast Lab, +15 Galleries, Window Galleries, Ledge Gallery, and Lightbox Studio, visit artscommons.ca/galleries and download our self-guided tour today!
