Catching up with Visual Artist - Avril Lopez

Catching up with Visual Artist - Avril Lopez

Read/Viewing time: Under 1 minute read, 8 minute video

Fueled by the whimsy of childhood imagination, Avril Lopez evoked a child-like state with her exhibition in the Lightbox Studio in Arts Commons earlier this year. Filling the Lightbox Studio space with unique plush characters, people were invited to enter into the space, a thus be granted permission to be a kid again.

“I use the studio space to develop an experimental environment,” says Avril. “Where it becomes a dynamic vessel where the childlike approach is conceived and utilized to connect with our surroundings.”

Once Avril’s exhibition closed, she said goodbye to Calgary for a new adventure in the Greater Toronto Area, moving into a cozy home in Windsor, Ontario. What she and her partner didn’t expect was that Ontario, and the rest of Canada, was about to undergo an unprecedented shutdown as the events of COVID-19 became a swift reality. During all of this, we were happy to receive an update from Avril to all of her friends here in Calgary.

If you’re not familiar with Avril Lopez’s work or you didn’t have a chance to drop by the Lightbox Studio while her exhibition was showing, please check out this video from earlier this year where we spoke with her about her art, at Arts Commons.
