A Glimpse Behind the Curtain with Alberta Theatre Projects’ The Wizard of Oz
Time to read: under two minutes
This December, Alberta Theatre Projects embarks on the first event of their reimagined 2020-21 season with a virtual behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workshopping process of a new play. This livestream reading of The Wizard of Oz, adapted by Andrew Scanlon, will take place live on the Martha Cohen Theatre stage as actors read through its draft format.
Director Haysam Kadri is excited about taking on this new play adaption, as well as the challenge of integrating new technology that will allow for a digitally shared creative experience.
“For many of us, it will be the first time, since the pandemic began, that we've gathered in a theatre to create something, so it's going to be a special experience,” says Haysam. “The approach to the work is the same, with a new and exciting element...streaming live to an audience, which will have its own challenges, but will also open the door for us to play with interesting and dynamic ways of storytelling.”
For Haysam, the chance to put his own stamp on such a beloved classic is an unique creative opportunity. Well-known in Calgary as the Artistic Producer of The Shakespeare Company, he’s no stranger to classic literature and for this production he’s backed up by some of Calgary’s most beloved local actors.
“The cast is comprised of some of the most talented artists in our city, each individual brings a dynamic and unique flare to the character, and the way in which we are presenting this story will be new,” says Haysam. “The other thing to note about this adaptation is that it's not a musical, so structurally it honours L. Frank Baum's novel.”
“There's definitely a reason as to why the story of The Wizard of Oz has stood the test of time. It appeals to our imaginations young and old. The movie really elevated this story to become a pop culture classic. It's sort of fascinating to think how a single 2-hour film was able to make such a monumental impact on the world,” says Haysam. “With the older generation it's nostalgic, with the younger generation it ultimately appeals to their sense of adventure and imagination.”
For the safety and wellbeing of the artists and crew, Alberta Theatre Projects is adhering to all recommended and enforced government COVID-19 guidelines and safety protocols, including any new targeted restrictions. Audiences will be able to enjoy this livestream exclusively from the comfort and safety of their homes.
