The YYC Music Awards: Experience it live and add new music to your personal playlist

It’s that time again! The time of year when the YYC Music Awards announce the list of talented Calgary musicians nominated to be recognized as the best in their genre. However, this year, rather than an evening of performances at The Palace Theatre, YYC Music Awards is taking the experience online. For the organizers of the YYC Music Awards, this is an exciting opportunity to have anyone tune and feel part of the event.

“It’s a celebration of the best of Calgary’s best,” says Stephanie Hutchinson, Program Director for the YYC Music Awards. “It’s a great way to discover new music, and to support our music community when opportunities for gathering together to celebrate are still limited.”

The decision to move online wasn’t an easy one as many other music award shows have just cancelled outright, but the YYC Music Awards didn’t want to take that moment of receiving the recognition away from the nominees and winners.

The move online isn’t the only change for this year’s awards. Rather than have categories for male and female, they’ve moved to solo and group, a choice that YYC Music Awards feels is more equitable and representative for all performers. They’ve also added a rap category to support Calgary’s thriving rap and hip-hop scene and expanded the definition of the world music category to include cultural music that now specifically encompasses Indigenous work.

“An exciting highlight this year is that we had our own theme and interlude music composed by an emerging local talent, Rachel Hardy,” says Stephanie. “She was shortlisted in a world-wide score competition for an episode of HBO’s Westworld. We’re thrilled to be able to feature this new music throughout the broadcast.”

Join the YYC Music Awards online on September 20 starting at 7pm for an evening celebrating Calgary’s standout talent.
