This Feels So Real - Interview with poet and spoken word artist Uma Samari
Time to watch: 5 minute video
Welcome to Arts Commons Presents: This Feels So Real
Inspired by the public art piece of the same name, This Feels So Real video series asks artists to turn their creative eye and ability towards this new world we live in and distill the big ideas and problems we’re now facing into something human-sized and understandable.
Uma Samari is a poet, spoken word artist, a Masters student in Educational Leadership, and a Kindergarten teacher. She has been featured in both the Love Notes Cabaret and We Gon Be Alright Cabaret at Arts Commons and has published two books of poetry: Ina Kwana, which translates to ‘how did you sleep’ in Hausa, and Black which focuses on love, resilience, colonization, race and blackness. In this conversation Uma speaks about rest, Ramadan, and re-setting while she’s at home.
As Uma mentioned, she’s only reading text books at the moment. So, if you’re looking for something a bit easier on the mind than academic leadership theory, here’s more information on the television series Uma mentions in her interview.
I would also recommend following Uma on Instagram (@Uma.Samari) where you’ll find some of her poetry and images from her everyday – including some really fulfilling cleaning videos!
